Nyamongo, Tanzania – The opposition convoy of Chadema Presidential candidate, Tundu Lissu was teargassed on Monday as he was heading to a campaign in the northern part of the country.
Taking to his Twitter handle, the presidential candidate said that his supporters were brutally caned and hurt.
“Our convoy has been subjected to a massive teargas attack by the Police in Nyamongo, in an attempt to block our route heading to our campaign meeting. Our supporters have equally been brutally caned and hurt,” Tundu Lissu tweeted.
He added, “Let them bomb us and shoot us, but we shall never back down!!”
At the same time, Tundu Lissu, has rubbished off claims that he was summoned by the National Electoral Commission in regards to his conduct of election campaigns.
“I’ve not received any complaint against my conduct of the election campaign from NEC. I’ve not received any summons from NEC on any matter concerning my conduct of the campaign.
Tundu Lissu, categorically stated that he will not attend to any purported hearing concerning his conduct of the campaign.
“I don’t intend to attend any purported hearing on any matter concerning my conduct of the campaign,” Tundu Lissu tweeted.
His statement comes after a local daily in Tanzania posted on its Twitter account that the Presidential candidate was to attend a hearing with the National Electoral Commission.
“Tume ya Taifa ya uchaguzi (NEC) imemtaka mgombea urais (CHADEMA), Tundu Lissu, afike Katika Kikao cha Kamati ya maadili Taifa September 29, NEC imesema baadhi ya wagombea wamekuwa wakitumia maneno ya kukashifu wagombea wenzao, tume, pamoja na kutoa taarifa zisizo za kweli.”
