Youths Chanting ‘hustler’ slogan disrupted ODM leader Raila Odinga’s Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) rally in Githurai on Wednesday.
The shouting match between Raila’s supporters and the ‘Hustler’ youths who are associated with Deputy President William Ruto degenerated to violence that prompted the intervention of the police, who lobbed teargas canisters to disperse the youth who attempted to charge towards where Raila was addressing the crowd.
The ODM leader was heading to Murang’a County to mark the start of his BBI campaigns in the Mt. Kenya region and had stopped by Githurai to address the crowd before proceeding with his convoy.
Raila urged the youth to support the BBI saying it would transform their lives through the creation of institutions like the youth commission.
Raila’s intense campaign for BBI across the country targets support in passing the constitution amendment Bill 2020.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared the way for the Bill to move to the county assemblies after verifying that it had attained at least one million voter’s signatures as required by the law.
The ODM leader, together with handshake partner President Uhuru Kenyatta said there may never be another opportunity for the region to negotiate for the kind of goodies contained in the report.
IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati addressed a letter to all the 47 county assembly speakers dated 26,2021 confirming the verification exercise was supported by 1,140,845 registered voters.
