NAIROB, Kenya — Former Gem Member of Parliament Jakoyo Midiwo has died following a heart attack on Monday evening.

News of his unfortunate death was confirmed by his cousin Ruth Odinga who said the deceased suffered a cardiac arrest.

Midiwo who died aged 54, was a Kenyan politician and member of the Orange Democratic Party.  He served as the member of Parliament for Gem constituency for three terms between 2002 and 2017

President Uhuru Kenyatta has condoled with the family while eulogizing him as a forthright, brave and straight forward leader who spoke his mind at all time.

He also described him as a consummate debator who had the interests of Kenyans at heart.

“I have received the sad news of the passing away of my friend, the Honorable Jaakoyo Midiwo with shock and disbelief. I was with him during my recent tour of Nyanza region during which we opened several projects in his former constituency.” Said the president

“The Honorable Jakoyo was a straight shooting debator on the floor of parliament who became famous for witty anecdotes drawn for his interactions with his constituents and Kenyans across the country.” He added.

Several leaders including Wycliffe Oparanya, Raila Odinga and Anyang Nyong’o have also joined the president in mourning the outspoken legislator who never shied away from speaking the truth.

“Sad day for our party. We have just lost a gallant son of the soil, a founder member of the Change Movement & a three-time Member of Parliament for Gem Hon. Jakoyo Midiwo… To the family, we say pole sana,” ODM said.

Jakoyo was also an established television panelist. His death comes a few days after the passing of his sister and his uncle.
