Nigeria—Some gunmen on Monday morning attacked the headquarters of Abia State police in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State.

A yet-to-be-identified police sergeant was killed during a gun duel between policemen and the gunmen.

The deceased was said to have been on guard when the gunmen struck the area.

A source who lives close to the station disclosed that he heard gunshots around 1 am.

“Around 1 am, we could hear gunshots. Initially, we thought the policemen at the station were the ones shooting because sometimes they shoot to scare potential assailants.

“By daybreak, we heard it was an attack and that a policeman was killed,” the source said.

It was further gathered that the hoodlums could have wrecked more damage but for the action of the policemen on guard.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Geoffrey Obonna, confirmed the death of Adama.

The PPRO said, “It is quite unfortunate that on 13th December 2021 at about 0100 hours, gunmen disguised in military camouflage and using gun truck opened fire at the policemen on pindown duty in front of 28 Police Mobile Force beside the State Command Headquarters, Bende Road Umuahia.

“The Policemen who were on red alert returned firing which repelled the hoodlums from carrying out their dastardly intentions and quickly fled the scene with bullet injuries.”

He added that Adama died during the gun duel, and called on residents of the state and operators of medical facilities “to volunteer information on anyone found or presented with bullet injuries to the Police or other Security Agencies”.
